This Training Package, Implementing Aromatherapy in Midwifery Practice, is intended to assist midwives and managers
who are considering the use of aromatherapy for pregnant and labouring women.
It provides suggestions to facilitate the process of implementation,
by posing a series of issues and case scenarios for discussion, combined with evidence-based facts,
extensive references and sources of further information. The professional issues pertaining to accountability,
government initiatives, regulation and the advent of clinical governance are emphasised in order to help staff
to utilise aromatherapy both effectively and safely and profiles of 14 essential oils recommended by Expectancy
as safe to use for pregnant and labouring women are included, followed by exercises in the form of clinical scenarios
to assist in applying theory to practice.
After working through the exercises in this Training Package midwives will be able to:
- appreciate the benefits and the possible hazards of using essential oils during pregnancy and childbirth
and take steps to reduce the risks to mothers, babies and staff
- produce a working plan, including policies and/or guidelines, for local implementation of aromatherapy
in midwifery practice
- acknowledge the professional, legal and Health and Safety issues related to incorporating aromatherapy in maternity care,
both in the mothers’ own homes and within an institutional setting
- select appropriate essential oils for mothers wishing to receive aromatherapy during pregnancy,
labour and the puerperium in order to provide a service which is both effective and safe
Expectancy also offers a Consultancy service for Trusts requiring a more personal in-house service,
as well as a university-accredited module on
Implementing Aromatherapy in Maternity Care,
which can be delivered on the site of the purchasing authority and tailor-made to their own requirements.
Although the Training Package is aimed primarily at midwives, it may be of interest to complementary practitioners
who are interested in specialising in caring for pregnant women.
Expectancy also offers FHT-accredited courses on Caring for Pregnant Clients
for complementary therapy practitioners and a Birth Support Therapist programme,
to prepare those wishing to accompany women in labour to use complementary therapies.
