Caring for Pregnant Clients
This self-learning programme, Caring for Pregnant Clients, is intended to assist complementary practitioners who are interested in treating pregnant and labouring women safely and appropriately with their particular therapies. It includes relevant anatomy and physiology, information on conventional maternity care, safety of specific therapies and a wealth of research abstracts and other references, internet and organisational resources. It also incorporates a number of exercises and activities to aid learning, including issues for discussion and reflection, case scenarios and quizzes. The self-learning programme can be studied independently, and used as continuing professional development. For those requiring professional recognition the self-learning programme can be studied in conjunction with online tutorial support; students are awarded a certificate of completion following submission of the various exercises. The course is accredited by the Federation of Holistic Therapists.

After working through the exercises in this Self-learning Programme therapists will be able to:

  • appreciate the benefits and possible hazards of using complementary therapies during pregnancy and childbirth and take steps to reduce the risks to mothers and babies

  • understand relevant anatomy and physiology, conventional antenatal and labour care and other aspects of the maternity services

  • acknowledge the professional, legal and Health & Safety issues related to using complementary therapies in maternity care
Expectancy also offers a Consultancy service for clinics and spas requiring a more personal in-house service, as well as university-accredited courses on Implementing Aromatherapy in maternity care and on Reflexology Techniques for pregnancy and childbirth, which can be delivered on the site of the purchasing authority and tailor-made to their own requirements. Expectancy also offers a taught version of this Self-learning programme which is accredited by the Federation of Holistic Therapists, and a Birth Support Therapist programme, to prepare those wishing to accompany women in labour to use complementary therapies.
