Reflexology is not just foot massage, but uses precise pressure points on the feet that link to other areas of the body. Reflexology can help with pregnancy and postnatal discomforts and ease pain and aid progress in labour. Regular pregnancy reflexology has been shown to reduce stress hormones and facilitate an easier birth.
Expectancy teaches a clinical style of reflexology, reflex zone therapy (RZT), devised by the German midwife, Hanne Marquardt, and used by many midwives in northern Europe. RZT can be used to treat backache, pelvic girdle pain, sickness, carpal tunnel syndrome and other pregnancy discomforts; it can stimulate contractions, treat retained placenta and retention of urine and help with lactation issues.
Our unit has been working with Expectancy since 2006. Our midwives use aromatherapy in labour, we offer moxibustion in our Breech Clinic, and we’re now introducing reflex zone therapy and acupressure for women with post-dates pregnancy. I would highly recommend Expectancy for its complementary therapy courses for midwives. Sarah Coxon, Consultant Midwife, Wexham Park Hospital, Slough
